Jaden Smith Is Just A Fashion Icon Living And Saving The Planet With Latest G-Star Collab
I recently saw Jaden Smith in concert on J-Cole’s KOD Tour and I can reassure you he brings his eccentric, alien energy right to the stage. If you’re familiar with the “SYRE” artist you know he’s passionate about a lot of things including music, fashion and making sure the world is a healthy, beautiful place for all people to live in.
Smith is known for his bold fashion choices choosing to don everything from dresses to Batman costumes. In addition to touring with J. Cole and Young Thug, and running eco-friendly bottled water company JUST Water with dad, actor Will Smith, his latest project involves a partnership with G-Star RAW on a sustainable denim capsule collection titled “Forces of Nature”. ESSENCE recently sat down with the 20-year-old about the line which is inspired by Earth’s elements and debuted at Hypebeast magazine’s first ever annual Hype Fest.
When asked if creating clothing was anything like creating music, Smith shares he is ensuring anything he creates doesn’t do unnecessary damage to the environment:
“When I make music, I definitely think differently from designing fashion because I don’t have to think about actually packaging anything. I’m not even going to make physical copies of my music, so the carbon footprint is really low. But because the G-Star collection — and clothing in general — is physical, more thought goes into it and more time is spent on the creative process.”
He credits Young Thug and Poseidon as his personal fashion muses and revealed why after discovering G-Star at the mere age of 11, he chose the label as his first design collaboration:
“I chose G-Star because they’re at the frontier of environmental sciences and because of the way that they manufacture their clothes — minimizing dye exposure, lowering CO2 emissions, plus [boosting] water and energy efficiency. I knew I wanted to partner with them based on those ethical reasons. I feel so honored to have my own jeans with G-Star!”
“When I realized the impact that the fashion industry has on the environment, that’s when I really wanted to look for and partner with a brand that had the same vision as me, but had more industry knowledge.”
The capsule which officially dropped last week breaks down into three themes — water, earth and eclipses — that each incorporate elements from the Sustainable Product initiative aiming to spread the message to treat the world we live in in a little better. You can shop “Forces of Nature” here.
