Issa Rae To Star In New Romantic Comedy American Princess Written & Directed By Black Women
I must have scrolled past the news of Issa Rae’s latest casting ten times before I stopped to actually read past the headline. Issa Rae, star and co-creator of “Insecure,” is joining the cast of a new film called American Princess.
That was the headline I read over and over again.
But the more I dug, the more promising this project began to sound. First, according to the Hollywood Reporter, it will be directed by Stella Meghie, the same Black woman who directed Everything, Everything with Amandla Sternberg.
Paul Feig, the man behind Bridesmaids and the Ghostbusters reboot will produce the project with Jessie Henderson through their company Feigco Entertainment.
Now, for the good news.
The film follows an American woman, played by Rae, who moves to London where she is “drawn into a world of wealth and high society and falls in love in a very unexpected way.”
So it’s a romantic comedy.
The script was written by Amy Aniobi, another Black woman who worked with Rae on “Insecure” as a writer and co-executive producer.
This will be the third film project for Rae, as she stars in The Hate U Give (coming to theaters on October 19.) Rae is also starring the project developed by Marsai Martin Litlle, which recently wrapped filming.
I can’t wait to see this one!
