Michael B. Jordan Breaks Down His Road To Hollywood Heavyweight Status In Latest Issue Of Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair’s November 2018 issue does a deep dive into the life of Michael B. Jordan, profiling the 31-year-old actor as he positions himself as a brand and businessman in tinsel town.

As the star preps for the release of Creed II, he opened up about his approach in taking over Hollywood.

“I’m first and foremost a black man, for sure, but what I’m trying to do, and what I’m trying to represent and build, is universal,” he said.

Jordan, who grew up in Newark before he and his family relocated to Los Angeles, openly discusses the weight of morphing from boyhood to manhood under the guise of celebrity.

He credits his parents who covered him with love and instilled a deep pride of their heritage of their into the thread of his fiber. Jordan says that he strives to create imagery for the next generation that lets them know that anything is possible.

“Creating our own mythology is very important because it helps dream,” Jordan said. “You help people dream.”

The actor reveals that he keeps a tight circle around him, including his family and frequent collaborator/director Ryan Coogler, while also seeking advice from those who walked the path before him.

He names Will Smith as one of his confidants who he recently called on in the midst of another controversy involving his alleged preference for white women. For years the actor has refuted rumors that he prefers white women over Black women.

While attending the May Cannes Film Festival to promote the HBO film, Fahrenheit 451, photos of Jordan flocked by a group of white woman made the rounds on social media. But it was Jordan’s clapback that made his Black female fans roll their eyes again–using a tone-deaf analogy of milk to convey that he indeed liked all types of women.

Throughout the article one thing is made clear–that he strives to ascend being typecast into roles that are written just for Black actors.

“This is the defining moment in a lot of different areas for me that’s gonna set up my next 5 to 10,” he said. “That’s why I’m so locked in right now, because if it was ever a time to get distracted or, like, drop the ball, this is not it.”

In taking a new age LeBron James approach to acting, Jordan doesn’t just want to be a respected thespian, he wants the power and influence to change systems that have been historically and notoriously white and male.

With his business endeavors including a marketing company, his production company, several philanthropic efforts and a series high stakes films on his plate, the Hollywood takeover of Jordan and his brand seems imminent.
