Richard Lawson Asked Beyoncé And Solange For Tina Knowles’ Hand In Marriage

If any woman is living her best life, it’s Tina-Knowles Lawson. And not because she found a man in her sixties. But because she seemed happy and whole before he came around. From the looks of things, she seems happy. And Richard Lawson came through and added the cherry to the top of her sundae.

The couple are appearing as a part of OWN’s documentary series “Black Love,” where they discuss the challenges of marriage as well as the sweetness.

In this clip from the upcoming season, Lawson and Knowles-Lawson speak about how they decided to get married—influenced, at least partially, by their granddaughter Blue Ivy.

See how it all went down below.

Tina Knowles-Lawson: “My daughter gave me, for my sixtieth birthday, this boat trip, and we went on that boat trip and all of the other people on the boat trip were married, except us. I think that kind of influenced us a little bit because it was great. We called it the love boat and we just kind of rekindled relationships. So we were in that romantic space.”

And then, after that, I went on boat with Beyoncé and Jay and Blue and one night we came down and Blue said, ‘Oh y’all look beautiful. When are y’all getting married?’ I think she was about 3. Not that that made us do it but it made us start laughing about it and thinking about it.

Richard Lawson: “I called her children and I asked for her hand in marriage from them. I thought that that was important because I knew without that, based upon the fact that Tina lives for her children, it didn’t stand a chance, unless they were on board.”

And I was fortunate enough that they were completely on board and they were just over the top excited about it.

So sweet.

The couple walked down the aisle, on another love boat, in Newport Beach, California on April 12, 2015.

“Black Love” returns on Tuesday, October 2, at 10/9c, on OWN.
