Fans of Princess Tiana, the young Black girls and the older Black women living with little Black girls inside of them, noticed a significant change in her appearance when she appeared in the Wreck It Ralph II trailer. She had lighter skin, a thinner nose and her hair was more 3c as opposed to 4c.

Later, we reported that Disney had made the decision to return Tiana to her original look. But if you thought it was just the fans who caused this decision, you’d be incorrect. Not to say that their reaction didn’t help–because it certainly did. But the fans weren’t the only ones who took issue with her appearance. Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Princess Tiana and the face for which Princess Tiana’s was based, also had a problem with the updated version of Tiana.

Thankfully, she used her relationship with Disney to speak about the issue of representation and what it meant for Tiana to look a certain way. Rose shared the meeting she had with Disney to convince them to change Tiana back to her original look on a recent Instagram post.
