(Politico) — Attorneys for Rep. Maxine Waters are demanding that the ethics committee stop investigating the California Democrat before her upcoming congressional trial on ethics charges. In an Aug. 25 letter to Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Jo Bonner (R-Ala.), the chairwoman and ranking member of the panel, attorneys Stan Brand and Andrew Herman claim that the ethics committee is violating both its own rules and federal criminal procedure by continuing to interview witnesses and gather documents after a special, four-member investigative subcommittee has already issued a “Statement of Alleged Violation” against Waters.
