With all of the buzz surrounding his work in Spike Lee’s critically-acclaimed BlacKkKlansman, there is a strong chance that we could see John David Washington nominated for an Academy Award during awards season early next year. Or at least Ellen DeGeneres feels the nomination coming. She asked Washington, 34, if he does get a nod, who he would have on his arm for the ceremony.

“Pauletta Washington,” he responded. “I’m bringing mom.”

The actor made no mention of taking a special young lady, aside from his lovely mom, because as he explained to the talk show host, he’s very available.

“I’m single AF, Ellen,” he said. “It’s hard out here. It’s so hard out here.”

He does, however, say that he and Beyoncé, of all people, are “forever connected” because she asked his mother if he was ok after he wiped out on a water ride in front of her and his famous parents.

“She asked if I was ok through my mom,” he said. “So really, she was already working mom.”

Despite being a Bey lover and a part of the BeyHive, John admitted he couldn’t get his hands on a pair of On the Run II tour tickets to save his life. But Ellen came through in the clutch with a pair of them. While he will be able to see his crush (and her husband) live, that’s as far as he’s going to get. He will have to stick to making Pauletta his hopeful Oscar date. But we’re sure he’s just fine for that.

This isn’t the first time John stanned for his mother publicly. In fact, he does it often, most recently lauding her during an interview on Today. Though people tend to focus on his father, Denzel, John said that she “was earning more money than he was when they married—before they got married. She was on Broadway working. She paid for the first date. She paid the bill, paid the cab ride. Classically trained pianist, went to Julliard. She’s a great artist in her own right and I learned a lot from her.”
