If we could go back in time, there are probably quite a few things we would tell our younger self in the hopes of avoiding unnecessary struggles. Don’t date that guy. Don’t take rejection so personally. Stop caring so much what other people think.

For singer Nicci Gilbert, formerly of the group Brownstone, the 48-year-old would tell her younger self to be more kind to herself when it comes to the way that she views her body. Gilbert was heavier in her 20s, and she ended up feeling pretty insecure as she stepped into the spotlight. If she could go back, she would change the grief she gave herself.

“I would tell my 20 something year old self to stop being insecure about being overweight,” she wrote on Instagram with old pictures of herself. “I would tell her that one day in her mid…okay late 40’s that her #MindBodySpirit will be in the best shape of her life. I would tell her not to worry that she didn’t make that audition because she was a ‘fat girl’ and to not hide her self behind sunglasses on stage because she felt self conscious. I would tell her that the best years of her life are yet to come and that she doesn’t have to fear not being accepted because of her looks, because her looks will change over time but her big beautiful heart should stay the same❤️I love me some her.”

Gilbert has been putting in the work to be in the best shape of her life, body, mind and spirit, for some years now. She took fans on that journey back in 2016, revealing that she was at one point almost 300 pounds, but was committed to keeping that from happening again. She was getting some help from her husband, trainer Leonard Daniels.

Two years later, the work hasn’t stopped for Gilbert. As she put it, “If I do nothing else what I do to transform my #MindBodySpirit is enough to keep me happy and that costs nothing but commitment.”
