Well, according to a new interview with the superstar, she once struggled with insecurities, one of which was about her smile that is known to light up a room.
When most people think of the legendary Janet Jackson some of the first things that come to mind is her triple threat status, her demure personality…and her beauty. She’s been widely considered one of the most beautiful women around for decades, but surprisingly she just revealed that she’s dealt with various insecurities throughout her life.
In a new interview, Jackson details that she didn’t begin to feel sexy or beautiful until she entered her 30s. Prior to that time, she says she struggled with body image issues amid being underneath the microscope of the celebrity spotlight. When discussing the insecurities that previously plagued her, she states, “I would have to say my body. A lot of it has to do with experience, getting older. Understanding, realizing that there isn’t just one thing that is considered beautiful. Beautiful comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. I had to find something in my body that I loved, and that was difficult for me to do.”
Jackson continues her sentiment, explaining, “At first, I couldn’t find anything. I would look in the mirror and start crying. I didn’t like that I was not attractive. I didn’t like anything about me. But I wound up falling in love with the small of my back. And then from there I found more things.”
On her vibrant smile, she admits that not only did she once hate it, but she thought she resembled a certain comic book character every time she smiled. “And then finally realizing my smile isn’t that bad after all. I thought I looked like the Joker because it was so big.”
Noting how the relationships we’re in can negatively impact our self-esteem, Jackson speaks about how a prior relationship ultimately led her to the current happy place she’s in today. “I got out of a funky relationship and finally got back to me. I went to therapy, which was all about finding that thing you like about yourself. The realization that, you know what, you’re not so bad after all.”
Janet Jackson has a lot on her plate these days after taking a few years out of the spotlight. She’s currently making waves with her new single “Made For Now,” which is currently in the top 10, she’s been raking up a host of honors, including Black Girls Rock and the BMI Icon Award and she’s gearing up to drop a new album.
