(AJC) — The Atlanta school board reversed itself and voted unanimously Monday to accept an investigative report on alleged cheating in the city’s public schools, a brief show of unity that came as Superintendent Beverly Hall outlined plans to address findings on security, ethics and leadership.
But there the togetherness ended. Board members took a series of 5-4 votes over a policy change their own lawyer termed illegal, although they postponed a final vote. They did so as Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, making a dramatic last-minute appearance, asked for a “cooling-off period” so the board may seek an opinion from the state attorney general’s office.
