Kenya Barris Sold “Bewitched” Remake To ABC Starring A Black Female Lead
TV mogul Kenya Barris may be headed to Netflix, but the “Black-Ish” creator has one more treat for ABC before his departure: a “Bewitched” remake.
According to Complex, the refreshed version of the 1960s sitcom will feature a Black woman as Samantha in a relationship with her white husband.
The show summary reads: “they struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”
Barris is EP on the project through his Khalabo Ink Society company. He will also write the show alongside Yamara Taylor.
The network sealed the deal before Barris’ contract officially ended with ABC on August 15th. Barris’ departure from ABC comes amid speculation the writer was at odds with the organization after a controversial NFL kneeling protest focused “Black-ish” episode was tabled.
In his new deal with Netflix, which is reportedly worth million, Barris said he desires to create content that “reflect(s) culture through an urban, youth, and female-focused lens.”
