That Awkward Moment You Expect Someone To Be A B-tch: Issa Rae Talks Reacting To Rih, Dissing Drake, And “Making Porn”
I am getting laundry and dinner out of the way at 10:00 in the morning and have the melatonin on deck for my toddler tonight because I refuse to be distracted from the third season premiere of Insecure on HBO starring everyone’s BFF Issa Rae. Our favorite awkward black girl stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to share how our beloved Insecure crew will tackle “adulting” while knowing better and doing better in season three. She also shared that despite rubbing elbows with celebrity heavyweights like Drake, Rihanna, Ava Duvernay and Shonda Rhimes, it wouldn’t be Issa if her life wasn’t filled with embarrassing moments that aren’t quite “World Star” material but are no less awkward AF.
Rae shared a moment at this year’s MET Gala when she gained enough liquid courage to approach singer Rihanna since they ARE homegirls, but making assumptions about how endearing Rih may or may not be caused her to make an a** out of herself:
“I just saw her sitting at the table and I had had a few drinks.”
“So I was like ‘Rihanna’s over there, let me go say hi, she knows me, we homegirls.’ And I went up to her and I was like, you know, tapped her.”
Taken aback by how friendly and warm the Bajan bad gal actually is, Rae was left speechless and didn’t have an appropriate response prepared:
“And she was so friendly and nice, I wasn’t expecting that, and she was like ‘Hey girl, good to see you!’ And I was like ‘Uh…oh…we’re, uh…’ and just excused myself and waked away. So any chance that we had to be best friends, I ruined it with my drunken nervousness, starstruck-ness.”
Rae also went on to share that how much influence her close knit family of seven has on the relationships and interaction we witness on Insecure. She shares that while most of her family members are fans, her mother was probably the most hesitant to sing the show’s praises:
“My mom is the only one that is…is taking some getting used to.”
“The fourth episode of our second season was a bit racy. And she text me after and was like, ‘You’re basically making porn. I don’t know if HBO is doing this or if this is you, but I can’t watch this anymore.’”
After her daughter warned her there were more sex scenes to come in future episodes, her mom expressed she’d no longer be watching the show, a protest that lasted until as late as last month when she finally watched all of the episodes and ended up loving it as much as the rest of us.
Rae went on to share her biggest regret about her Insecure character, the greatest advice she’s received from her industry circle of friends as well as the night she curbed Drake. You can check out the hilarious interview below and don’t forget to tune in for the season three premiere of Insecure tonight on HBO at 10:30 PM ET.
