“Wow”: Issa Rae Reacts To Petition To Keep Lawrence On Insecure

- By

With the Insecure Season 3 premiere right around the corner (August 12), fans of the show have a lot to celebrate — unless they’re part of the Lawrence Hive.

As Issa Rae stated recently, Season 3 is going to explore “life without Lawrence” since her character and Jay Ellis’s found closure during the Season 2 finale and said goodbye to one another.

“We want to stay as true to life as possible,” she said to Vulture. “They had a great conversation at the end of season two and it was just about like, hey, she’s moving on Daniel [sic], sometimes we have those conversations. You never see the exes again. And it’s okay! You gotta explore life without Lawrence.”

But it’s not okay for fans who love Lawrence. A few even got up the gumption to create a petition to get the show to include Lawrence in the new season. When Issa caught wind of it, we couldn’t tell if she was impressed or annoyed by the effort. Either way, it received her attention.

So far, the petition has more than 9,000 signatures. But it’s not just a petition on, say, Change.org to share dismay. There’s actually a whole website called WheresLawrence.com. On it, the creators share their disappointment over the news that Lawrence may be seen a lot less, if at all.

“Jay Ellis’ Lawrence might not come back for another season of Insecure. Not cool!” reads the site’s “Looking For Answers” page. “Not only because Jay Ellis has a huge and devoted fan base — but because Lawrence is an awesome complex character that we want to see more of. It’s time to get LOUD to bring him back! Sign and SHARE this petition to tell HBO to bring Lawrence back to Insecure!

Even though the show is clearly about character Issa Dee and her best friend Molly, the people behind this page also see Lawrence as an integral part of it and aren’t ready to let go.

“While we are excited to see what’s in store for Issa, we refuse to allow this to be the end of Lawrence’s story,” they said. “We know if we can get enough fans to sign, we can convince HBO to finish Lawrence’s story on Insecure!”

“Refuse” though? Good luck with that.

As for how Jay Ellis is taking the reality that his character won’t be around, thankfully, he’s handling it all with humor.
