(NYT) — With the prospect of a damaging public ethics trial looming less than a day away, Representative Charles B. Rangel and the House Committee on Standards of Public Conduct continued their brinkmanship on Wednesday.

As lawyers for Mr. Rangel and the committee continued negotiations about a settlement that would pre-empt a public hearing by an adjudicatory subcommittee, the ethics committee sent out a public notice about the hearing. It is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with the disclosure of details about the charges that Mr. Rangel’s fund-raising and personal finances violated ethics rules.
