Erica Campbell Reveals She’s Had Suicidal Thoughts: “Something Was Telling Me, ‘Just Slice Your Wrists'”

In the most recent episode of We’re the Campbells, Erica and Warren Campbell have a pretty eye-opening conversation about the demons she’s had to battle in her life as she prepares to write her first book. They were deeper than what Warren, and likely viewers, expected.

“I remember when I was twelve, we were living in Inglewood and I tried to kill myself,” she said in a clip from the episode. “Something was telling me, ‘Just slice your wrists in the kitchen.’”

When he asked her if she did it, she said that thankfully, she had a change of heart with the help of her faith.

“I heard that voice, but I thank God for that prayer that was going on in that house because I knew not to do that,” she said. “Now I know it was the enemy trying to take my life even as a young girl. But I don’t think I’ve ever told anybody. I don’t think I’ve shared that.”

In her confessional, Erica realized the importance of sharing such experiences with not only her family, but also with the world in the hopes of helping others.

“I do need to dig deeper, I can honestly say,” she said. “I didn’t even realize that I was just saying things I say all of the time. There’s still a lot of me that people haven’t seen and don’t know, and there are the things that are a little deeper and require a little bit more.”

Erica’s revelation about having suicidal thoughts as a kid also opened Warren’s eyes to the possibility that their children could be having the same thoughts and not telling anyone about it.

“I’ve known my wife for twentysomething years and we’ve been married for 17 years. It’s crazy to me that I’ve never heard that before,” he said. “If that happened that would have changed the trajectory of my life. And it makes me wonder, does my daughter or our kids have thoughts like that?”
