While we all know there’s a stigma in the Black community concerning mental illness and mental health treatment, what’s far from stigmatized is self-medication. Drinking, smoking weed, and other potentially self-harming behaviors have come to be seen as socially acceptable responses to stress, hardships, and mental illnesses, but if we’re truly going to progress in the way in which we deal with mental health issues, a serious conversation around self-medicating must be had.

In this episode of The Conversation, Raven Stralow, Assistant Director of Mental Health Consulting and Support Services organization Connections in Recovery, talks to us about deconstructing beliefs concerning mental health in the Black community and how we can begin to have open and honest discussions that facilitate change.
