Nearly every entrepreneur says the hardest part about starting a business is obtaining capital. And for women business owners that’s especially true, due to discriminatory lending practices and a lack of access to funds needed to start their own businesses. But in the realm of haircare, Sally Beauty is doing something big to help the next major female-owned haircare business expand its reach and profit.

Earlier this month, the retailer announced Sally Beauty Cultivate, a business accelerator program for and by women to help beauty entrepreneurs grow their business. As part of the program, Sally Beauty is currently accepting entries from female-owned hair care brands
who are looking to expand their business and the reward is quite impressive. The top brand chosen will receive $25,000 in financial support, product distribution at, and mentorship from the Sally Beauty team. The chosen product line will also be shared with a group of highly sought after beauty influencers at one of the brand’s monthly influencer events.

“We’re excited to identify the next wave of women entrepreneurs and help support them through the Sally Beauty Cultivate program,” Jamira Johnson, VP Digital and Innovation at Sally Beauty, said in a news release. “We believe there is so much hair care innovation happening every day in women’s homes, salons, and communities, and we want to encourage that innovation to thrive and grow.”

To be considered for the Sally Beauty Cultivate program, your brand must:

  • Include a female founder
  • Have an existing hair focused product in hair care, color, or tools that does not currently have widespread distribution at a major retailer
  • Be based in the U.S.

Applications are being accepted now through July 18 and in August, three semifinalists will be selected for consumers to vote on. From August 15-16, the three semifinalists will travel to Sally Beauty headquarters to pitch their brand.

Sally Beauty already has a long history of supporting some of our favorite brands and Black female entrepreneurs. The company was the first national beauty retailer to provide distribution for Made Beautiful, Mielle Organics, The Mane Choice, and Arctic Fox, as well as the first to launch an exclusive ingredient range with Carol’s Daughter, the Pracaxi Nectar Collection. Whoever wins this opportunity will certainly be in good hands and good company.
