(Black America Web) — Many people know employers will look at Facebook and other social media sites to get an indication of what a prospective hire is really like, but what many people are discovering is that employers are also running criminal and credit checks on applicants. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has launched an “access campaign,” designed to alert people to the use and misuse of background checks on job applicants and to pressure employers to adhere to the law requiring them to run checks that are specifically related to the job and consistent with business necessity.
