Designer Kate Spade Found Dead From Apparent Suicide
Today the fashion world lost one of its most beloved designers. Kate Spade, known for her successful jewelry and handbag line, was found dead from an apparent suicide in her apartment on Park Avenue in New York City.
Spade, who was born Katherine Noel Brosnahan was 55 years old. According to Yahoo, she was found hanging by a scarf from a bedroom door by a housekeeper around 10:30 am this morning. A note was also located at the scene, though officials have declined to share any further details.
The eponymous Kate Spade brand was founded in 1993 by Spade and her husband Andy Spade whom she married in 1994. In 1996, the first Kate Spade boutique opened in SoHo and in 2004, the home collection, “Kate Spade at home,” was launched. In 2017, the brand was sold to Coach for $2.4 billion and Spade went on to launch another accessories brand, Francis Valentine, which specializes in handbags and shoes.
In 2017 Spade, a Kansas City, MO, native, was welcomed into the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. That same year, she was also named one of the Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company.
Kate and Andy, who is the brother of actor David Spade, have one daughter, Francis Beatrix Spade, who is 13. According to NBC, Kate Spade New York, has more than 140 retail shops and outlet stores across the country, and more than 175 stores internationally.
