Serena Williams Dedicates First-Round French Open Match Win In Catsuit To “All The Moms Out There”
She may not have been seeded for the French Open due to her time off while pregnant and delivering daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian (the former number one went into the tournament ranked 451…), but that didn’t stop Serena Williams from returning to her first majors tournament since giving birth and winning her first-round match. If that weren’t enough, she also did so in a catsuit from Nike to send double the positive message.
“Catsuit anyone?” she wrote on Twitter following the win. “For all the moms out there who had a tough recovery from pregnancy—here you go. If I can do it, so can you. Love you all!!”
The tennis legend, who had not competed in a Grand Slam major since winning the Australian Open while eight weeks pregnant, and hadn’t played since March, beat Czech player Kristyna Pliskova 7-6(4), 6-4 in the first round.
When asked after her match about her ensemble, which was all of the talk on social media in reference to the French Open, Williams told reporters, in the same vein as her tweet, that the look was paying homage to “all the moms out there that had a tough pregnancy and had to come back and try to be fierce, in the middle of everything. That’s what this represents. It’s exciting. And you can’t beat a catsuit, right?”
Williams’s delivery struggles have been written about by the star, and were also featured in her HBO documentary special, Being Serena. After requiring a C-section to deliver Alexis Olympia in September, the 36-year-old ended up with a pulmonary embolism and hematoma, and also tore her cesarean scar. All of the health issues caused her to be bedridden for weeks.
Williams played for the first time since giving birth in January, and returned officially to tennis in March for Indian Wells. And while that tournament, as well as the Miami Open weeks later didn’t end with success, she’s off to a great start in Paris now that she’s taken a step back and found her confidence again.
And for the fierce fashion record, this isn’t the first time Williams has worn a catsuit on the court and absolutely killed in it:
