Eve Says Past “Toxic Relationship” And Career Struggles Left Her Drinking And Popping Xanax To “Numb” Herself
On the latest episode of the Facebook Now show Red Table Talk, Willow Smith revealed that she started cutting herself following the success of her song “Whip My Hair.”
“I was just listening to a lot of dark music and it was just so crazy,” Smith told mom Jada and grandmother Adrienne. “I was like plunged into this black hole and I was like cutting myself. Yeah, and doing crazy things.”
The revelation touched a lot of people, including rapper and The Talk co-host Eve. While she didn’t cut herself, the 39-year-old admitted that after the cancellation of her hit UPN show Eve and following the dissolution of a less than healthy relationship, she started simultaneously drinking and popping prescription pills that were meant for her anxiety disorder to deal with the pain.
“At a point in my life, I’d gone through, like [Willow] says, a dark hole. I call it my dark hole period. My dark period,” she said. “I was out of a toxic relationship, I didn’t have a TV show, I didn’t have a record deal. I was just kind of like, ‘What is happening to my life?’ So I started drinking. A lot. I started drinking and drinking and drinking because I didn’t want to deal with my emotions. I didn’t have anybody to really talk to. I was even popping Xanax and drinking to numb my pain. And at the time that I was in it, I didn’t see that I was harming myself. I just felt like I was coping but I really wasn’t. You think of harming yourself as cutting, but drinking and drugs is exactly the same thing in many ways.”
The star said her wake-up call came when she was charged with a DUI in 2007. According to reports, while driving in Los Angeles late one night, she crashed into a cement divider and over a sign on the divider.
“I got a DUI and it took my DUI to wake me up because I had to wear one of those ankle things and I didn’t want to because I knew it would force me to deal with my ‘S’, my stuff,” Eve said. “And thankfully I did and was able to get healthy. I prayed myself through it and I finally started figuring out the things that I needed to do to make myself healthy.”
