For many, Rihanna was the undisputed best dressed star at the Met Gala last Monday night in New York City. She stepped on the carpet in an intricate Maison Margiela creation by John Galliano to match the theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. It was made up of a sculptural jacket, a skirt worn over a bustier and a custom bishop’s hat. The embroidery, bejeweled to the nines, took 500 hours, and because of that, the head-turning look ended up being quite hefty. It was of such great weight the 30-year-old said walking around in it ended up being an unexpected workout.

“It was heavy, every step was a squat,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I promise you, my butt gained from that night!”

While the booty gains were worth it, as well as the reaction from all present, the star admitted she was tempted to pass on the look for something a lot less involved and of a lot less weight. But with all the work that was done on the ensemble, she didn’t want all of that to go to waste.

“I had another option that was a lot more simple, same Margiela, but I felt like it was an insult to the people who sat there and like, hand beaded that entire thing, to just say, ‘No, put that in the archives,'” she said. “It was so great, I couldn’t deny it.”

This isn’t the first time Ri Ri has worn something very heavy on the Met Gala red carpet. The iconic Guo Pei gown she wore to the Met Gala in 2015 was so much, at 55 pounds, that the designer (who worked on it for two years) didn’t know if it was a good idea for the star to wear it.

“I actually didn’t think the dress was the right one for her,” Pei told WWD. “I thought it would be too heavy and too hot, but she was so touched the moment she put it on.”

Rihanna wouldn’t be Rihanna if she didn’t go to great lengths for fashion. And who needs to work out in the gym when you can just work out by styling in the finest threads?
