When it comes to motherhood, Ciara definitely is working it in her own way raising her 3-year-old son Future and 1-year-old daughter Sienna. The “Body Party” singer damn near did back bends juggling pregnancy, a wedding to football player Russell Wilson and a music career over the past few years. She recently sat down with Essence to share how she handles it all and why motherhood can and should look different for every woman. To begin, she just wants this Mother’s Day to be a regular day filled with downtime for her to spend with her family:

“When you have two kids it’s double the love. With Russ, Future, and Sienna, I have an abundance of love, so it just feels really good.”

“As an entertainer when you’re just going and going, and with business when you’re really driven, when you have days like Mother’s Day you take the moment to put all of that to the side and really be normal and embrace that special part of life.”

With such a busy schedule, Ciara admits she leaves the planning to her husband, and says motherhood is something that she’s choosing to define for herself:

“Being a mom is not about doing what everybody else does.”

“You might take some inspiration and advice, but it’s really about designing your own game plan.”

When it comes to game plans, Ciara promises that her calendar is filled with plenty of projects including working on new music, giving back to the community and partnering with brands that share her personal values. Back in March she teamed up with jewelry brand PANDORA  for their “Shine” collection which features pieces that allow women to exude love and light inside and out:

“What I love about PANDORA is that they’re really about celebrating us women and empowering us and encouraging us to let our light shine.”

Ciara notes her favorite piece in the collection is a rose gold pacifier charm she says, “reminds you of your kids [and] kinda feels like you have a piece of them with you.”

Ciara shares she loves working with PANDORA because “the jewelry is affordable and you can still feel and look luxurious at the same time.”

When it comes to married life, Ciara has shared repeatedly that she couldn’t be happier, but admits that happiness can’t be achieved without “doing the work” like life coach extraordinaire Iyanla Vanzant might say. Ciara shares that after breaking off an engagement to her son’s father, rapper Future, she decided she had to approach relationships differently if she wanted something that would last. She shares before meeting Wilson she literally wrote down what she wanted in a mate:

“I’m a big believer in writing down what you want in general. I’m a believer in seeing it, speaking it, and writing it down.”

“There’s something about the power of the tongue and the mind and you’re actually affirming it by writing it down.”

In addition, she says practicing patience was key:

“I took a moment to pause and to really reflect on the journey and where I was at that moment of even looking at love again. I think that it’s really important for [women] to know exactly what we want and be clear about it and also be patient.”

“I didn’t know I was going to meet my husband when I did, and that was really a blessing and I believe it was God’s timing, but I was patient and was willing to be still for as long as I needed to have the best partner I could have in my life.”

It looks like Ciara’s patience definitely paid off and we’re sure she’s being spoiled this Mother’s Day as well as the rest of the year by her family.
