“I’m Sore”: Jordin Sparks Steps On The Red Carpet Three Days After Giving Birth To First Child
As reported over the weekend, 28-year-old singer and actress Jordin Sparks and husband Dana Isaiah welcomed their first child, son Dana Isaiah Thomas, Jr., into the world on May 2. The healthy baby boy weighed in at 8 lbs and 4.5 oz and was born at L.A.’s Natural Birth Center & Women’s Wellness space with the help of a midwife. The birth went so smoothly, mom, dad and baby left hours after the birth, similar to Kate Middleton’s quick hospital exit after birthing Prince Louis last month.
“It was miraculously beautiful,” the 28-year-old shared with PEOPLE. “Dana caught him with my midwife, Simona, and when he handed him to me, I was absolutely overwhelmed with joy. He was and is everything we imagined.”
She also told the publication that she was ready for all that motherhood would bring.
“I’ve always loved kids and knew that if given the blessing, that I would love and embrace it more than I realized,” she said. “It’s only been a few days and I love it so much already!”
But Sparks took a brief break from her new responsibilities to take care of some business.
On Saturday night, May 5, three days after giving birth, she attended the Los Angeles premiere of Show Dogs. She voices a dog in the movie. When asked how she was feeling by Entertainment Tonight at the premiere, Sparks was honest.
“I’m really good. I’m sore, but good,” she said. “He’s here. It’s just fun to stare at him. His name is DJ, named after daddy, and the moment was incredible! To finally have him in my arms and stare at him. He’s really here. He made it. This is what we’ve been waiting for. He’s just so perfect.”
For the record, everyone’s bodies recover differently after giving birth. Experts recommend that you use the first few days following your delivery focused on rest and recovery. Any bursts of energy are thought to be best used by getting yourself back to 100 percent and getting to know the needs of your baby. Doing “too much” isn’t thought of as a good idea.
But for Sparks, she said there wasn’t much physically stopping her from feeling like she could smile for the cameras at the premiere for a little bit, so she went for it.
“I was actually expecting to be immobile. I was expecting all of that and when I woke up the next day I was like, ‘Oh, I can get out of bed. I’m ok,'” she she told ET. “I mean, I want to be careful. I don’t want to end up in the hospital, but at the same time I actually do feel really good.”
“I knew about the premiere a couple months ago but I completely spaced,” she added. “Then they were like, ‘Hey, the premiere is on Saturday. How are you feeling?’ and I was like, ‘Oh, yeah. I can actually go to that.’ I’m excited to get back to him already though. I’ve only been gone for like 40 minutes.”
She also revealed that you will soon get the chance to see how she and her husband are adjusting to marriage and their growing family. They’re planning on doing a reality show.
“It’s really exciting. I’ve had a number of opportunities to do a reality show,” she said. “People have asked over the years and I’ve just been, like, ‘No, no. It’s not the right time.’ And, I think now, with everything and how my life has shifted, when I met Dana I fell in love and it completely changed everything, and now with DJ, it’s like OK.”
