Gabrielle Union “Drank Rosé And Did Pilates” To Prepare To Kick A– In Breaking In
In the trailer for her new film Breaking In, Gabrielle Union plays a single mother who has to get on beast mode after armed criminals kidnap her children and lock her out of of her father’s mansion during a botched robbery. She gets resourceful, turning into a Black female version of MacGyver to get in the house and free her kids, and shows off a level of athleticism we haven’t had the chance to see from Union in years.
When asked how she prepared for her role at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the 45-year-old said she decided to do what a number of hip moms do these days: She got serious about her Pilates — and her wine intake.
“I drank rosé [wine] and did Pilates,” she told PEOPLE. “You’d be surprised how Pilates gets you into shape and gets you stretched up.”
For Union, she wanted to stick to being stretched out and in good physical condition as opposed to trying to introduce more complex and intense training into her workouts. Her character didn’t require all of that. She is simply (but powerfully put) a mom ready to raise hell to protect her children. No Jiu-jitsu and hand-to-hand combat training necessary.
“The whole point of my character is she’s a mom. She wasn’t expecting to turn into a Navy Seal on the drive up to pack up her deceased father’s house,” she said. “We just wanted it to be a normal mom doing extraordinary things to save her family. I was tempted to take boxing, but I wanted it to look as natural as possible, all adrenaline and no skills.”
And while she’s excited for everyone to see her go to work in the film and put her Pilates to good use, Union is also proud to be a producer on the project. She told PEOPLE that she realized she could have more of an impact creating opportunities for herself and others if she also worked behind the camera.
“All those people who were put out to pasture who were hot in ’07 and forgotten about in 2010, I want to give you a job,” she said. “I want to make sure you can feed your family. I know you have more to give. I know that women over 27 still are amazing and viable and sexy. We just got to have the opportunity.”
Check out Breaking In when it hits theaters on May 11.
