Don’t: Immediately Go After Another Offer/Threaten To Leave

One of two things will happen when you broach the raise convo with your boss: Either you get exactly what you want or you are given a number of excuses as to why you won’t be getting a raise or promotion in the near future. You’re company can’t afford it at this time, you still need to prove your worth, now is just not the right time — the lines go on and on. But as much as you might want to quit your job and storm out to make a point, don’t. Unless, you are suffering extreme emotional stress at work, a small paycheck i better than none at all.

Moreover, don’t immediately go looking for another job to land an offer and use it as leverage. Though it might be effective in getting you a slight bump in pay and maybe even a promotion, it’s a negative approach and one your bosses will not appreciate in the long-term.
