Bounce TV Throws Up The Deuces (Again) To The Cosby Show Reruns After Assault Conviction
By now, you’ve heard that comedian Bill Cosby was convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand yesterday. Each count is punishable up to 10 years in state prison.
At 80 years old and legally blind, some people are concerned that the possible 30-year sentence he’s currently facing will be especially hard on him because he’s elderly. You know what’s actually going to be hard? Me trying to find reruns of The Cosby Show. I’m way more concerned about that.
According to Deadline, Bounce TV is getting rid of repeats of the classic sitcom (again). And yes, I am sad about this.
“Effective immediately, Bounce is removing The Cosby Show from our schedule,” Bounce TV said in a statement.
I was rooting for Bounce TV because in December of 2016, the network made the rather controversial move to allow reruns of the show to air despite the anti-Cosby-everything movement at the time. The network claimed that after doing some research, they found that their target black audience could differentiate between Bill Cosby the person and the character, Dr. Heathcliffe Huxtable, he played.
Uh – has the research changed? Are some of us having a problem now differentiating between the two?
Keep in mind that Bounce TV pulled episodes of the show in 2015. So, who knows whether this is really a final goodbye on their platform.
All I know is that there are other characters on that show that I love. Attorney Claire Huxtable, played by the incomparable Phylicia Rashad, was the main reason I watched anyway. She has the best scenes with the best advice and shade that no other character on any other show has been able to mimic. And I can’t go without randomly watching the “Gordon Gartrelle” episode with Theo (played by Malcolm Jamal Warner) and Denise (Lisa Bonet). The whole show is gold! Who takes gold off the market?
So, if you’re like me, huffing and puffing, then don’t worry, another platform is still streaming it – Amazon. There is no word yet on whether they will pull it, but while it’s still up, I’ll definitely be checkin’ for it.
