In a new interview with PEOPLE, Kenya Moore spoke for the first time, outside of social media, about revealing her exciting baby news at the Real Housewives of Atlanta reunion. The 47-year-old beauty and husband Marc Daly are expecting a baby before the year ends.

“It’s not anything that I planned or even meant to say,” she told the magazine. “It was the first thing [host Andy Cohen] asked me, and I was really thrown off guard. The reunion usually goes on for 16 hours, so I figured it might come up. But not that soon. I felt stuck!”

But she doesn’t regret sharing the big news, though still early in her pregnancy, because she has been through so much to get to this point.

“I’ve waited 47 years for this moment,” she said. “I didn’t really want to announce it too soon because I feel it’s very early on in our pregnancy. But I have suffered so much in my life when it comes to wanting a family around me. So this is the day I’ve been waiting for my entire life. It’s a dream come true.”

She elaborated on her suffering, mentioning the pretty much nonexistent relationship she has with her mother, which viewers of RHOA have learned about since she joined the cast in Season Five. She has attempted to reach out to her mother on-camera before, with sad results. And so the star is looking forward to having a tribe of her very own.

“No one really knows what it’s like to feel rejected and abandoned by someone who gave birth to you and who treated you so badly and who hoped you would fail,” she said. “For me to have a family of my own, to me, that’s what makes me feel like I’m at the pinnacle of happiness.”

And, of course, her restaurateur husband has been just as thrilled at the prospect of starting a family with his wife of nearly a year since she broke the news.

“He’s thrilled! He’s just so happy,” she said. “He gave me a big hug and a kiss and then he started to just kind of make jokes. That’s just his personality. He’s a fun-loving, happy person.”

Daly, along with all of the star’s friends, believe she’s going to be a great parent. And Moore, herself, is looking forward to being the type of mother she didn’t have.

“Everyone in my life, they tell me I’m a nurturing person and going to be the most awesome mother,” Moore said. “They see something in me that they know that’s going to be true.”
