This morning Cynthia Nixon, who many of us recognize and remember for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the longtime series turned movie franchise “Sex And The City,” made an announcement this afternoon. In what many may perceive as a career shift, Nixon announced that she was running for governor of New York.

She’ll go up against incumbent governor Andrew Cuomo and former New York State Senator Terry Gipson.

While we know Nixon for her on-screen personas, she’s always worked as an advocate for public schools and equitable education through the state. As a member of the LGBTQ community, Cynthia helped create Fight Back New York to remove senators opposed to marriage equality. She has also fought for reproductive rights, working for Planned Parenthood in Albany.

As for her platform for governor, Nixon plans to continue to address education inequality but also the mismanagement of the Subway system.

Coming from a background in entertainment, her sexual orientation and the fact that she’s a woman will all factor into the way Nixon is perceived by voters.
