“I’m A Product Of Her Disadvantages” Octavia Spencer Credits Late Mother With All Of Her Success
Octavia Spencer is winning. With one Oscar under her belt and a nomination for another, for The Shape of Water, she’s certainly making a mark in the industry. During a recent interview with People, Spencer spoke about the woman who helped get her here: her mother.
When People asked Spencer who was the woman who influenced her the most, she named her late mother, Dellsena Spencer.
“The woman who has inspired the most is my mother. I am a product of her disadvantages in life, and she tried to make sure that we took advantage of all of the opportunities that were afforded to us.”
“We had more than she did, and a lot less than a lot of people, even to this day,” she says. “So she is the one woman that I credit everything to.”
Spencer’s mother, who took on several jobs as a single mother, died when Spencer was 18. And while she wishes she were around to have other conversations with her mother, she helped her to believe in herself, long before she went to Hollywood.
“I think she gave me the necessary foundation to be able to do what I do,” she shares. “I think you have to have blind faith in yourself and your ability. You have to not know that there’s a wall there because if you’re constantly looking for barriers, then they will be there. You have to not see boundaries,” Spencer says. “You have to see the sky is the limit, otherwise you will never get off the ground.”
