The number of deaths of mothers during childbirth has doubled in the last decade, and is four times higher for women of color, regardless of socioeconomic standing and access to insurance. With Black women being main recipients of high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes, we run a higher risk of increased mortality rates during pregnancy, childbirth, and the first year of having a child. However, there are things that we can do to fight this scary trend. Creating healthy habits before and while pregnant, and listening to your body when things don’t seem right. Most deaths during childbirth are due to things that are treatable, like hemorrhaging and preeclampsia. If there seems to be a problem wrong with your body, do NOT be afraid to ask questions, because the sooner that a doctor can treat you, the better.
