Newest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition Cover Model Is From Compton — Meet Danielle Herrington
It’s that time of the year again when Sports Illustrated releases their famous swimsuit edition and we find out who will be on the cover. You’ll be thrilled to find out that this year’s cover star is a Black woman from Compton, and she’s killing it.
Danielle Herrington shot her Sports Illustrated photos with photographer Ben Watts in Harbour Island, Bahamas recently, and it was her second time posing for the magazine. Last year the Compton native did her first professional shoot, as in ever, with the publication in Fiji. As it turns out, she’s come pretty far since then, so far that she impressed the magazine’s editors.
“Last year, Danielle was a rookie, and yet already an exemplary model,” said Swimsuit Issue editor MJ Day. “She’s an extra hard worker and a natural brand ambassador. All those things separately don’t guarantee a cover, though. Danielle was a shy girl, who went from taking her first photos last year to showing up this year a completely different person. All the good things about her seemed to be magnified.”
Herrington is only the third Black woman to be a SI Swimsuit Edition covergirl. She joins Beyoncé, who posed in 2005, and Tyra Banks, who of course made history in 1997.
To help announce the news to Herrington, Sports Illustrated actually called on Banks to share the cover with the 24-year-old model. Herrington was told she was taking part in a virtual reality photo shoot, and when she “accidentally” walked into the wrong studio, she found herself in the same room with Banks. In true America’s Next Top Model fashion, the legendary model shared Herrington’s cover image with her in a dramatic way, and the women broke down in tears in their excitement. Truly a beautiful moment.
As for this latest issue of the magazine, the 55th, there are a diverse cast of models, including five athletes, mothers, authors, model search contestant winners and more.
