Hypertension is a common disease that is caused by having high blood pressure. Within the 75 million Americans that suffer from high blood
pressure, Black women make up 45.7%, which is more than Black and White men and White women. According to the CDC, in 2013 high blood pressure accounted for 1000 deaths per day. Having hypertension leads to heart disease, failure, and other life-threatening diseases. How can you lower high blood pressure? Talk to your doctor and ask about your “risk profile” and how to make a lifestyle change. Become more active, engage in a healthier diet (the US Department of Health and Services suggests following the DASH eating plan, which encourages eating whole grains, fruits, and vegetables), stop smoking (1 in 5 Black women smoke) and drink in moderation.
