Most of us have heard of the Law of Attraction. It’s basic principle is that all of our thoughts have energy and the more you think about something, the more you attract it into your life and that you have the power to create the kind of life that you want.

I first heard of this concept while watching the video, The Secret. The idea that your thoughts have power made sense to me. Take the placebo effect for example. People can be given a sugar pill and be told that pill will fix their ills. The pill is doing absolutely nothing but because people think it is, they all of a sudden feel better. To me, encouraging people to think positive to attract more positivity was common sense. I remember running out to buy materials to make my vision board and being excited about what I had learned and wanting to share it with others. When I did that I was met with resistance from others. “If you want something you need to pray” was the rebuttal I often heard. The Law of Attraction wasn’t anti-prayer and neither was I, so I didn’t understand why I couldn’t believe in both. Did believing in the Law of Attraction contradict believing in God?

I did more research and found out the Law of Attraction is one of several Universal Laws and they all work together. I had heard of most of these laws just by other names. For example: The Law of Compensation states that each person is compensated in like manner for that which he/she has contributed. So basically you reap what you sow –karma. Also consider the Law of Action: In order to manifest, your actions must support your words. To me that sounds like the familiar scripture, faith without works is dead. Thinking positive to reach your goals is important but action is needed as well. You can’t just sit, think positive and expect things to come to you. The Law of Attraction is saying that you are the co-creator of your life and many people believe by saying that you are pushing God out of the equation. I disagree.

There are many scriptures in the Bible that back up the Law of Attraction. “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” – Proverbs 23:7. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” – Proverbs 23:7. We are also given free will to make our own choices, so we are in charge of our lives and the decisions we make. We control the quality of our lives so we are the co-creators of it. Also, if you believe you are created in God’s image and God is the ultimate creator then it would make sense that He would give us the ability to create as well. I believe the law of attraction is a gift that God has given to us. Once we learn how to use it we can create our own reality with the help of His influence, positive energy and action.

Now I’m by no means an expert on either God or the Universal laws, I’m just a woman trying to live a good life and accomplish my goals. To me, the law of attraction makes sense to do so and that’s the route I’m choosing to follow. I’m constantly doing research on the subject to learn more so I can perfect my techniques. I don’t feel it contradicts God in any way, if anything, I think it shows how much control he wants us to have over our lives. Even if you disagree, I think we can all agree that thinking positive to attract more positivity in our life is a good thing.

One good thing that has come out of me practicing the law of attraction is my gratitude has increased. Everyday I am forced to think about something positive and it makes me appreciate the small things in life. Even when something in my life has thrown me for a loop I still think about what I’m grateful for and it puts things in perspective. So regardless of whether or not law of attraction is your cup of tea and your personal feelings about whether or not it contradicts God, I think we can all agree that any belief that makes you grateful for the big and small things in your life is a positive thing.
