Michelle Obama Reveals What Was In Tiffany’s Box Gifted By Melania Trump, And It Wasn’t Her Stolen Speech
Michelle Obama is back! On the Ellen DeGeneres Show at least.
The 54-year-old former First Lady visited her old friend to help DeGeneres celebrate her 60th birthday recently. And while on the show, the two caught up about life after the White House. It was her first televised interview since moving on from her eight-year role.
When asked what she’s been up to, Obama joked, “Nothing. I wake up when I want to wake up.”
But really, the family has been busy. Sasha’s in her junior year of high school in D.C., Malia is living her best life at Harvard, President Obama has different deals and engagements in place, and as for Michelle, she’s been traveling and doing public speaking. “We’ve had some fun.”
And so have their dogs, Bo and Sunny. In the family’s cozy D.C. home, the dogs are getting used to doorbells and visitors who actually get to come to the front door. Obama is getting back used to it as well.
“It is odd because now I have a door and a doorbell and people actually trip out when I come to my door and open it,” she said. “And the dogs, Bo and Sunny, don’t know what a doorbell is. So the doorbell rings and they’re like, ‘Umph. I’ve never heard that before.'”
But before she could get fully comfortable talking about the present day and the future, Obama was asked by DeGeneres about the past. She was specifically queried about her memories of inauguration day and the moment when Melania Trump gave her an unexpected gift when she and Donald visited the former First Couple the morning of the ceremony.
“Oh yeah,” Obama recounted. “The Tiffany’s box.”
If you’ll recall, Twitter had its own ideas about what the gift was:
When asked what was in the box, she replied that it “was a lovely frame.” And while she was appreciative of it, Obama admitted that the gift-giving moment was as awkward as it looked.
“There’s all this protocol. I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here,” she said. “Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, ‘OK, what am I supposed to do with this gift? [laughs]'”
“Everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box, and I’m thinking, ‘Do we take the picture with (it)?'” she continued. “And then my husband saved the day — see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out — no staff, no one. I was like, ‘What do you do with the box?'”
The interview as a whole is a great one (it admittedly makes you feel quite nostalgic and long for the Obama days — if you already don’t). The women have a sarcastic banter that is humorous, and Obama even brings DeGeneres some cute gag birthday gifts. But if short on time, you can hear specifically about the Tiffany box moment at the 3:40 mark:
