Jennifer Hudson Will Portray Aretha Franklin In Her Biopic
Clive Davis revealed that Jennifer Hudson will be portraying Aretha Franklin in her upcoming MGM biopic, Deadline reports. Hudson was indeed handpicked by the Queen of Soul herself. At last night’s pre-Grammy Party, which is hosted by Davis, Hudson gave the audience a preview of her singing Franklin’s classics as she performed “Respect” and “Think.”
While the screenwriter and filmmaker have not been chosen yet, Scott Bernstein and Harvey Mason, Jr. are set to produce the film. Bernstein produced Straight Outta Compton while Mason, Jr. has worked alongside Franklin and produced music for Dreamgirls, which also starred Hudson.
In 2013, the R&B legend told Vulture that she wanted Hudson to play her in life story and in 2015 her vision began to come together when Bernstein got on board.
Franklin also wants Denzel Washington or Billy Dee Williams to play her father, but there’s no word on whether they are involved.
