For so long there has been talk about Idris Elba playing James Bond. And while the 45-year-old no longer seems interested in tackling the role of the British Secret Service Agent, a role in which fans more than those behind the films seemed set on having him play, he would like to see Bond get a makeover. The classic character is currently being portrayed by Daniel Craig. And while he was touted as a possible next “Black Bond,” Elba hates that terminology.
“There’s no such thing as a black Bond,” Elba told Variety. “Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male? It could be a woman, it could be a black woman, it could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have… do something different with it, why not?”
We don’t really see that happening, but we like where his head is.
Elba probably could have been a magnificent James Bond, as he has already dabbled in action films, has a lovely accent and looks pretty incredible in a suit. But if you’ll recall, the author of the most recent James Bond books didn’t think so.
“For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part,” said author Anthony Horowitz. “It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.”
But for the record, a lot of the conversation surrounding him filling in Bond’s shiny shoes, especially the whole “Black Bond” stuff, left the star with little interest in actually making it happen, as well as opportunity.
“Honestly, it’s a rumor that’s really starting to eat itself,” Elba said. “If there was ever any chance of me getting Bond, it’s gone.”
