I get that Monique is likely tarnished her entire reputation in the industry. Despite her talent, her outspoken nature ensures that people find her “difficult.” Particularly because she’s a Black woman who’s not afraid to ask for what she wants. The world doesn’t always respond too kindly to women like that.
But I had to admit that MoNique’s willingness to express her grievances will benefit young women, Black and White in the future.
Last week, we reported about Netflix offered her $500,000 for a comedy special they would host on their streaming platform. In response to what she interpreted as disrespect, MoNique asked that we boycott Netflix. People didn’t even address the notion of the boycott. But there were plenty of folks who took issue with MoNique even asking for more. They felt like she was too washed.
But this trend of lowballing Black comediennes is not specific to MoNique. After she spoke out, fellow comedian Wanda Sykes shared what Netflix offered her for a comedy special.
In response, MoNique recorded this video.
Seems like a pattern.
Does this latest Wanda Sykes development make you look at the situation any differently?
