Watch Out World…Grownish Has Been Renewed For A Second Season
If you’ve followed Yara Shahidi’s character “Zoey Johnson” from under the roof she once shared with parents Rainbow and Andre and siblings Junior,Jack and Diane on ABC’s Blackish, you know that only three episodes into Freeform’s Grownish, she is living her best life. In some not so surprising news, fans recently learned they’ll get to witness Zoey balancing books, boyfriends and some questionable behavior all the way into a second season. It also appears her coeds Ana Torres (Francia Raisa), Jazlyn and Skylar Foster (Chloe and Halle Bailey respectively) and Aaron Jackson (Trevor Jackson) will be there to Snapchat all of her most awkward undergrad moments.
According to Shadow and Act, the news came in an official announcement from creator Kenya Barris as surprise to Shahidi at the inaugural Freeform Summit this past Thursday. With the second season also comes an increase of episodes, so fans will get 20 episodes as compared to season one’s 13.
Clearly Freeform knows a good thing when they have it. The site reports the first episode ranked as Freeform’s biggest series launch in two years with total viewers coming in at 1.562 million, the largest audience to tune into a premiere since Shadowhunters in 2016. The show also had the best digital debut in the network’s history with 4.5 million views across linear and digital platforms, which is the best digital debut in Freeform history, according to the network. Fans were also getting their hashtag on as we followed the cast across Cal U’s campus. Grownish was the most social cable series on TV for Wednesday, with 214,000 engagements across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr.
Barris, Shahidi fellow cast members celebrated the good news with fans on social media. Congrats to the Grownish family. We wonder if Trevor Jackson’s character Aaron will stick around for season tow and hopefully leave that dreadful duck tail behind in season one.
