With the start of a new year comes a whole host of movies that will be making us run for the nearest theater. Whether you’re looking for an action-packed, super hero film or two hours of female empowerment in an unlikely package, 2018 has something for everyone. MadameNoire takes a look at the 10 films we’re most excited about seeing in the year to come.

Her style isn’t the only thing that’s killer. #ProudMaryMovie in theaters January 12th.

Proud Mary

2018 is poised to be one hell of a year for the lovely and talented Taraji P. Henson. She has a number of films hitting theaters, two of which have made our top 10 list. First up is “Proud Mary.” Henson stars as hitwoman Mary Goodwin who works for a crime family in Boston, but sees her life thrown into turmoil after a hit gone wrong. Not only does Henson look completely bad-ass wielding weapons and rocking some sick leather attire, but “Proud Mary” also stars the delicious Billy Brown. Yup, it’ll be a good time at the theater.

Black Panther

Without question one of the biggest and most anticipated movies of 2018 is Marvel’s “Black Panther.” With a stellar cast of some of Hollywood’s most notable African-American stars (Chadwick Boseman Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, among others), “Black Panther” is not only incredibly high on our list of must-see movies, but is also a cinematic milestone. It is blazing a bright trail to diversify not only the Marvel superhero universe but big-budget, action cinema as well.

Aquaman

You might be wondering, considering the disaster that was “Justice League” why “Aquaman” would be on our must-see movie list for 2018. It’s simple and can be summed up in two words: Jason Momoa. He is one of the most stunningly sexy, manly men we’ve ever seen and you have to think that if the forever-young and beautiful Lisa Bonet wanted to hitch her wagon to him he’s got to be something special. And given that “Aquaman” is bound to have Momoa running around showing off his incredible physique we think it’ll definitely be worth the price of admission.

Join the dream scheme. #Oceans8 hits theaters June 2018.

Ocean’s 8

We’ve been waiting for quite some time for “Ocean’s 8,” the all-female reboot of the “Ocean’s” franchise and after seeing the trailer our excitement has only gotten stronger. Some of our favorite ladies including Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Sandra Bullock and Mindy Kaling all star in this action-packed heist film that sees the Ocean’s crew pull off the ultimate act of thievery at the Met Gala.

A Wrinkle In Time

A childhood favorite is being turned into one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year with Ava DuVernay at the helm. “A Wrinkle In Time,” based on the classic book by Madeleine L’Engle, will come to life on the big screen, telling the story of a young girl who vows to save her father from evil forces keeping him captive on a distant planet. With the help of classmates, her brother and three astral travelers (played by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling), she works to save her dad.

Acrimony

Taraji P. Henson strikes again with an equally bad-assed turn in “Acrimony,” the ultimate tale of a woman scorned and the sweet, sweet revenge she exacts afterwards. Henson is one of the most dynamic and multi-dimensional actress out there today, but we have to admit that we sort of love her best when she’s at her absolutely crazy, next level extra and “Acrimony” accomplishes just that.

Black Klansman

Though there is the possibility that “Black Klansman” might not come out until 2019, we can’t contain our excitement for this latest project from Spike Lee and Jordan Peele. The story of an African-American police officer who infiltrated the KKK, “Black Klansman” will star John David Washington (son of Denzel Washington) in the lead role of Detective Ron Stallworth. This film is bound to be one of the most intriguing and conversation-generating movies of the year and we can’t wait to see it.

Deadpool 2

We know what you’re thinking: Another superhero sequel. Pass. But we beg you to reconsider and if there is one superhero follow-up to see this year it’s certainly “Deadpool 2.” Not only did we absolutely love the incredibly sexy and funny Ryan Reynolds in the first film, but we’re all about the beautiful Zazie Beetz taking on the role of ass-kicking super weapon Domino. We’re still waiting for a legit trailer for “Deadpool 2,” but in the meantime, we’re loving the Bob Ross-teaser we’ve been served up. If that’s a preview of the sort of humor we’re in store for, then let me book tickets now.

Happy Birthday @michaelbjordan! #Creed

Creed II

Another sequel bound to show you a good time at the movies in 2018 is “Creed II.” Our boopiece Michael B. Jordan reprises his role as Adonis Johnson as he hunts for the man who killed his father. Not going to lie, boxing movies aren’t always our thing. But after such an incredible performance in “Creed,” we have all the confidence in the world that Jordan will bring that same fire to the long-awaited follow-up.

Night School

While most of our selections have been on the serious or more action-packed side, “Night School” is definitely one comedy we’re excited about. To be honest, there isn’t a whole lot of information out there about this one, but really all we need to know is the following: The movie stars Kevin Hart, Tiffany Hadish, Rob Riggle and Taran Killam so if that crew can’t make us laugh, nothing will.
