Erica Garner, the eldest daughter of Eric Garner who died in 2014 after a fatal chokehold from a NYPD officer, has died. According to reports, the 27-year-old passed away yesterday (Dec. 30) after going into cardiac arrest on Christmas Eve.
Garner suffered brain damage after her heart attack and was then in a coma. Soon after, doctors determined that she was brain dead and did not have any chances of recovering. The heart attack was reportedly triggered by an asthma attack.
Her mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, told reporters that this was not her daughter’s first heart attack. Garner suffered a heart attack in August after giving birth to her son. Her pregnancy strained her heart, which was enlarged.
After her father’s tragic death in 2014, Garner became a civil rights activist that fought to end police brutality. In January 2015, she teamed up with her brother, Steven Flagg, to record a song titled “This Ends Today” after the grand jury decided not to indict the police officers responsible for her father’s death.
