Erica Garner Declared Brain Dead With No Possibility Of Recovery
After reporting this morning that Erica Garner suffered brain damage as a result of a lack of oxygen when she went into cardiac arrest on Christmas Eve, doctors have now declared the 27-year-old activist brain dead with no chance of recovery. NY Daily News reported the update, saying the mother of two remains on life support with her mother, Esaw Snipes, telling the paper “She’s not gone, she’s brain dead. Physically she is still with us.”
Erica reportedly suffered her first heart attack shortly after giving birth to her son in August, “with doctors saying the pregnancy stressed her already enlarged heart,” the Daily News said. This second heart attack was triggered by an asthma attack.
Earlier this week, we reported that Erica Garner, activist, and daughter of police chokehold victim Eric Garner, suffered a massive heart attack.
Yesterday, family members provided an update on Erica’s condition. Through her verified Twitter page, a family member tweeted that Garner suffered major brain damage.
After she suffered the heart attack, Garner was placed in a medically induced coma. After the family shared the news about the brain damage, a New York City Councilman tweeted RIP. The family quickly corrected the tweet, exposing its falsehood.
Garner, 27, became an activist after her father Eric was killed after Staten Island police placed Garner in an illegal chokehold. While the chokehold had been prohibited by the NYPD, a grand jury refused to press charges against the officer who strangled Garner.
Later, the family settled with the city for $5.9 million.
