Angela Bassett isn’t the only actress in Hollywood who is packing some serious upper-body strength. Lupita Nyong’o is known not only for her work, her gracefulness and her beauty, but also for her toned deltoids, triceps and biceps. The reason for her maintained strength currently has a lot to do with her appreciation of pole-dancing. After hanging out at a “fancy” gentleman’s club with friends, the Oscar winner found herself mesmerized by the strength and abilities of the dancers. She was motivated enough to try this extremely physical activity for herself.

“It was incredible and sexy,” she told Vogue for her January cover story, “and I thought, I need to learn how to do that.”

So she did, and continues to. Nyong’o actually took the writer who interviewed her to a studio in New York City called Foxy Fitness. As Alexis Okeowo would soon find out, it’s an exhausting practice the 34-year-old takes seriously:

Dressed in a dusty-pink sports bra and a matching wrap skirt over cream shorts, Nyong’o groans half-jokingly during the strenuous warm-up, then scrutinizes her pole with seriousness. Each time our instructor, competitive champion Ashley Fox, shouts out a new, seemingly impossible move, I wearily wilt against mine, and Nyong’o bursts into laughter.

According to her interview, physical fitness, in general, has been of great importance to Nyong’o since she was a child “watching her aunt exercise to Jane Fonda videotapes at home in Nairobi.” These days, she enjoys pole-dancing, but also has a trainer whom she works out with at her apartment in Brooklyn a few times a week. In addition to that, the actress said that for every role she takes on, even if it isn’t a physical one as her work in Black Panther was, she trains, stretches, consumes a great deal of water, enjoys massages and winds down with Epsom-salt baths consistently to be at her best.

It might sound like a lot, but if you’ve looked at Nyong’o, then you know her hard work has been paying off royally.
