Aretha Franklin Issues Statement Following Death Rumors, Addresses Weight Loss
As we shared with you yesterday, there was a scary rumor going around that Aretha Franklin had passed. It all started when a fake Aretha Franklin Twitter account that only has 129 followers and two tweets total, managed to garner more than 2,000 retweets and 15,000 mentions after posting “It Is With Sad News That We Announce the Passing Of The ‘Queen Of Soul’ Aretha Franklin 1942-2017.” Franklin’s name began trending on Twitter as fans tried to figure out what was really going on.
Eventually, those in Franklin’s team were contacted by media, including entertainment reporter Shaun Robinson and Roland Martin, and refuted rumors of her passing, saying instead that she was doing fine.

Franklin has reportedly also finally spoken out about such rumors, including speculation about her health due to her weight loss, in a statement emailed to Us Weekly. It was brief, but got the point across that people shouldn’t worry.
“I’m doing well generally, all test have come back good,” Franklin said. “I’ve lost a lot of weight due to side effects of medicine, it affects your weight … Thanxxxx for your concern.”
Franklin has shut down past questions about her health, including the time some were reporting that she had pancreatic cancer, causing her to be hospitalized near the end of 2010 and requiring her to have surgery. She said that was not true. But the star, who recently announced she would retire from performing later this year, has been up and down for most of 2017. While performing at an event for Clive Davis in April, Franklin told the crowd she was under the weather.
“I’ve been fighting an upper respiratory viral infection,” she said. “So you’ll forgive me if I miss a few notes.”
And she’s canceled concerts in the past due to heath issues, including canceling a date in Toronto this past June.
However, one can’t forget the fact that Franklin is 75 and has been performing since the 1950s. So dealing with health issues here and there, including possible respiratory ones as a singer, shouldn’t be a shock.
Whatever the reality of her situation, fans can breathe a sigh of relief at the news from the Queen of Soul herself that she is fine and well.
