“It’s Going To Be Pretty Interesting”: A Lean Tyler Perry Gave Up Meat — Just In Time For Thanksgiving

Tyler Perry has joined the growing list of famous folks who’ve decided to give up meat (which also recently included rapper Remy Ma), and he picked an interesting time to go cold turkey. Pun intended.

While promoting his newest project, The Star, and his new book, Higher is Waiting, Perry told Rachel Ray that he recently stopped eating meat while talking about holiday plans. A lean and healthy-looking Perry is following in the footsteps of his partner, Gelila Bekele, who is vegan.

“We’re in a weird place ’cause mom is vegan and I just stopped eating meat,” he said. “But there is something called tofurkey, tofu turkey, that we’re going to try and see if that works out. If not, we’ll go down to New Orleans and do what we always do — eat everything we can get our hands on.”

Steve Harvey was actually the one who introduced Perry to the tofurkey idea. When he visited Harvey’s talk show before making an appearance on Ray’s, Perry initially scoffed at the idea and was still coming to terms with a vegan Thanksgiving.

“Well, it’s going to be pretty interesting. Gelila’s vegan so we have to figure out what to eat that’s vegan,” he said. “So it’s going to be healthy, that’s all I know. But I grew up in New Orleans so we had everything. Hamhocks, chicken, turkey, all kinds of stuff. But it’s changed a little bit.”

To help out, Harvey asked Perry if he’d heard of tofurkey.

“Shut up Steve! You’re kidding me? Tofurkey? There’s really tofurkey?”

To which Harvey responded, “It’s the most trifling thing you’ve ever eaten.”

“That sound like I’m cussing when I say Tofurkey,” Perry replied. “Nah man, but I’ll eat some tochicken.”

Guess he’s had a change of heart!

Whatever his thoughts about faux turkey, it’s not a surprise that Perry has chosen to try a diet without meat (even if just for a limited time). If you’ll recall, the director and actor slimmed down big time over the last few years and it all started when he was prepping to star in the film Alex Cross. The weight loss increased his confidence big time.

“I walk into a room with a lot more confidence,” Perry said in 2012 to Men’s Health. “All my life I’ve tried to hide my height. I was taller than everybody else and stood out, so I would slouch and try to hide it. But with what I’ve been able to do with my body, I’m owning it. I’m standing up when I walk into a room.”

While we probably wouldn’t mess with tofurkey, we’re sure with his lady and son Aman around, he won’t be thinking too much about missing meat this Thanksgiving.
