While the idea of some classics being remade makes us cringe, we felt nothing but excitement when Netflix announced they were adapting Spike Lee’s 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It. And once we found out DeWanda Wise would be the star of the series we were completely sold. So was our sister site Cassius who made the Baltimore-born beauty the cover star for their Nov/Dec issue.

In her feature story, Wise discussed landing the role of Nola Darling, which will likely prove to be one of the biggest of her career, and staying true to who she is as a wife (she’s married to Underground co-star Alano Miller) and sexual being while playing a character with such an insatiable sexual appetite.

“We were very, very specific about what was and was not permitted,” Wise told Cassius. “While viewers will only see the freedom of it, there’s a lot you don’t see. For example, you will never see any of my co-stars touching or fondling my boobs. There’s no frontal on the show. [My husband and I] were super specific about our love and marriage, and keeping what’s special and intimate, special and intimate. What turns me on, only Alano knows that.”

Wise also had an extra tip about how develop that intimacy.

“Find a partner who shares your sexual appetite,” she advised. “I have friends who are crazy voyeuristic, but they’re compatible. They have the same vision and needs. For Alano and myself, we have the same need to be in person, so we make our time together a priority. I think step one is be on the same sexual page. Step two is keep exploring. There are workshops and classes. There’s so much you can do to explore what you like.”

We have a feeling watching this show might spark a few ideas for couples out there too.

Check out Wise’s full interview with Cassius here and be sure to tune in to She’s Gotta Have It when the series hits Netflix November 23.
