Kim Kardashian paid homage to iconic singers this Halloween, including Madonna, Cher, Selena and Aaliyah. All was well until she wore her Aaliyah costume, which caused the Internet to have a fit.  Kim K didn’t see an issue at first, but many were offended that she dressed up as a black woman and accused her cultural appropriation.

After all the backlash, the reality star issues an apology via her website.

“Aaliyah was such an amazing singer and she will forever be a music legend. I saw online that some people were offended by my Aaliyah costume and I am sorry if that offended anyone but I wasn’t  dressing up as a race or culture but rather as a woman whom I admire and think is amazing, so I don’t agree honestly. I play every kind of genre of music in my home and I like for my kids to be exposed to many different artists  as options for our Halloween costumes. We don’t see color in my home. It’s all love and respect. Kourtney was Michael Jackson for one of her costumes and she wasn’t criticized. My son was Axel Rose. We are just paying homage to people and artists we love and respect– it’s just that simple.”

This isn’t the first time Kanye’s wife has been accused of  being insensitive. Most recently she had to apologize for defending beauty vlogger Jeffree’s Star’s racist comments he made in a 12-year-old video that resurfaced.

“I just feel a bit naïve, and I do want to really apologize for me feeling like I had the right to say ‘get over it’ in a situation that involves racism, ” she said via her Snapchat.
