It’s that time of year again when we ditch protective styles like braids and have to go hard protecting our exposed strands to the elements — you know, cold air, harsh winds, all the things that threaten to damage our curls.
A lot of us wear hats to shield us from cool temperatures — and to look stylish — but those wool hats can wreak havoc on your hair, causing frizz, breakage, and other unwanted consequences. That’s where Charis Alexander’s new invention comes in. The 26-year-old Parsons graduate has designed what she says is the first-ever hat with a removable silk lining — patent currently pending — to help you keep it cute and damage-free when rocking hats this winter.
“As a health conscious naturally curly haired (4C) lady who admires the power of accessories to ground or transform a look, I’ve always frustratingly shied away from hats because the damage they caused on my hair was unacceptable. Enough was enough, and so Layd
™ was born,” Alexander said.
Layd is the name of her headwear and lifestyle brand which currently includes four different hat styles — beanie, boater, beret, and boat — with removable silk linings that will protect and promote healthy hair and can also be easily removed for washing.
“Fashion should be simple and effortless,” Alexander added. “I was tired of knowing so many women who wore du-rags, bonnets, and polyester scarves under their hats just so they could sport their favorite styles. And then, they would be faced with the dilemma of revealing these makeshift solutions when time to take off their hats in public. An unnecessary embarrassment caused by a non-inclusive market.”
Thanks to this entrepreneur whose affordable styles range in price from $39-$109, that embarrassment no longer has to be a reality. Check out the four designs below which come in shades of black, blue, brown, tan, gray and red and can be purchased here
