There’s a trend brewing in the world of urban music. More and more artists are complaining when their products don’t sell — albums or any of their side projects.
Pharrell Williams has filed breach of contract papers at Manhattan Federal Court and is seeking $5 million in damages against the company he partnered with on his liquor line, Qream, over slow sales. It was not long ago that Pharrell debuted the cream liqueur. But now he’s unhappy with the sales, according to Allhiphop.com, and the music producer has filed a lawsuit against the distillery Diageo North America claiming that the company “failed to produce, market and distribute his high-end Qream to the appropriate target audience.” This, he claims, resulted in low sales.
Pharrell also wasn’t pleased with the product itself. He claimed the bottles had faulty tops. Lastly, he accused the company of shutting down production without warning last July and Williams did not have time to find another partner.
And not too long ago, Kid Cudi publicly called out his record label for not shipping enough physical copies of his long-awaited rock album “WZRD.” He used his Twitter feed to voice a complaint about Universal Republic, blasting the label for only shipping 55,000 copies and not securing radio play for the LP’s lead single “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie.”
Because of this, reports Hip Hop DX, CuDi threatened to suspend the release of the third installment of his critically acclaimed Man On the Moon series until 2014. Despite, the complaints WZRD debuted at number one today on iTunes.
Finally (because three’s a trend), Nicki Minaj complained during a radio interview that Target and Walmart had failed to support the release of her album “The Re-Up” back in November. The album was a repackaged version of “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” with a few new tracks and a DVD that the retailers had no interest in carrying.
Surely, we won’t have to wait too long before the next celeb airs their personal set of grievances.
