Well, things seem to be coming together quite nicely for quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The Washington Redskins superstar made quite the noise in his rookie season with a quiet storm presence who took charge of the football field during the regular and post-season. Well, that is, of course, until he was badly injured and could no longer play.

But having been in the off season for some time, Griffin has had time to plan for something big: his wedding day.

According to his mother, Griffin plans to marry his fiancée Rebecca Liddicoat this July.

E! Online reports that RGIII’s mom told Washington D.C. television station WTTG that Liddicoat and Griffin will be jumping the broom on July 6th in Virginia.

Apparently, a wedding registry has been created at Bed, Bath & Beyond for the couple and it coincides with the July 6th date his mother revealed.

The couple has allegedly been together since high school and were engaged back in 2010.  Griffin had his college teammate play the guitar while he made his speech in front of family and friends before getting down on one knee.

Maybe he’ll cut his hair in preparation for the ceremony. I mean…it’d be nice.

Congrats to the couple! Hopefully, the summer wedding will bring even more excitement to his game for the 2013-2014 football season!

Good News! Brian Banks Lines Up 4 NFL Tryouts After Rape Exoneration

Last week we all felt for Brian Banks after we heard that he had lost 10 years of his life, his chance of attending USC on a football scholarship, and what he thought was his opportunity for a career in the NFL when he was falsely accused of rape as a 16-year-old high school student. Brian was exonerated of the rape and kidnap charges last Thursday after his accuser admitted to lying, but the good news for the 26-year-old doesn’t end there.

On June 7, Brian will have his chance at an NFL career with a scheduled tryout with the Seattle Seahawks. What’s ironic is Brian will be trying out for Pete Carroll, the same man who offered him a full ride to USC 10 years ago when he was the head coach at the university. Now he’s giving Brian another shot as the coach of the Seahawks.

If by some chance Brian doesn’t match up to Seattle’s expectations, he still has other options. The aspiring athlete has also gotten calls from the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Miami Dolphins. And even if those opportunities don’t work, he can always accept a position he was offered to work in the front office for Major League Baseball team, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“I about fell out of my seat when I read that one,” Brian said during an appearance on the Today show, speaking on his change of luck.

This news is incredible in so many ways for Brian, who not only spent five years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit and another five on parole. He’s also had to walk around with an ankle bracelet, register as a sex offender, and struggle to find jobs with a rape and kidnapping charge on his record. Now, opportunities are falling into his lap and he’s ready to take advantage of his new found freedom.

“I feel very confident in getting that tryout and producing on the field,” Brian told the Seattle Times. “I’ve been working extremely hard for this opportunity.”

In a separate interview with ESPN’s Rick Reilly the 6-foot-2, 245-pound man who was a linebacker in high school and led his team to a state championship when he was a junior said he promises to deliver during tryouts.

“I’ll make ‘em happy,” he said. “After all I’ve been through these last 10 years, I can still do some things that will impress you.”

Somebody better sign this man.

Using a wheelchair to meet her groom at the end of the aisle, Keasha (Rutledge) Draft married the love of her life, 35-year-old football player Chris Draft, in a ceremony Nov. 27 in Atlanta.  Sadly, just one month later to the date, Keasha lost her battle to cancer and passed away Dec. 27.

Video of the couple’s ceremony and reception shows what an emotional and loving celebration their wedding day was as the bride shares a first dance with her husband, cuts the cake, and tosses the bouquet to guests who hope to find a love as strong as hers.

Chris Draft last played for the Washington Redskins in 2010 but dedicated much of his life to giving back to kids by participating in different service projects including his own Chris Draft Family Foundation, which empowers families to live healthy lifestyles. His friends have asked everyone to send prayers to the families as they grieve during this difficult time.

Readers Rally Around Washington City Paper

(Washington City Paper) — When Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins, filed a defamation lawsuit against the Washington City Paper in February, readers rushed to show their support — and the newspaper gave them an outlet. The City Paper set up a fund for reader donations meant to offset the litigation fees, collecting 600 donations totaling $28,000 in the first three weeks.  But since the initial influx, the fund has received only 190 donations totaling just over $3,000. With donations slowing to a trickle even as the lawsuit drags on, the paper is left with a fund that matters more for what it has come to represent: tangible evidence of reader loyalty at a time when many newspapers are fighting steep readership declines.

NFL Player’s Defense Rests On Dislike For Black Women

There’s one thing white America never has to worry about and that’s a white man making a point about how undesirable the female members of his ethncity are. For the latest spectacle of self hate, we turn to Washington Redskins player Albert Haynesworth who was recently indicted on one charge of sexual abuse, having been accused of fondling a cocktail’ waitresses breast.

According to the indictment, Haynesworth told a security guard, “I didn’t touch her” and that the waitress was “a little black girl” and he “doesn’t even like black girls.” Later, according to the indictment, Hanyesworth told detectives “I know what this is about, she is just upset I have a white girlfriend. I couldn’t tell you the last time I dated a black girl. She was trying to get with me.” (Source: dcentric.wamu.org)

Although people tend to make rash remarks when feeling defensive, why does it seem that Black women are so attacked by their men? What if the accuser had been a white woman? She probably would’ve been called a Itchbay, end of story. But Haynesworth had to take it there and really convey his dislike for his sisters. White women are never demonized in these narratives, since they are simply accepted of being representative of all women. But Black women, over and over again, absorb very specific attacks in the media and in everday life. Sadly, Black men are not always there to defend their women, which is not the case amongst other cultures and ethnicities.
